Students no longer sit Key Stage 3 examinations.
On the 14th of October 2008 the Schools Secretary Ed Balls revealed the Government was scrapping national testing at Key Stage 3 with immediate effect.
Teachers however, will still be expected to make assessment at the end of Key Stage 3. The assessment will be part of the normal cycle of teacher assessment from 11 to 16. It will be for heads and teachers to decide on appropriate assessment arrangements and how to report progress to parents.
The syllabus for Key Stage 3 students is unchanged.
Students will still be taught the same material in the same levels. There is no doubt that many, if not most schools, will still have students in year 9 sit a form of Key Stage 3 exam.

Two tests are “lower” mental tests suitable for students studying levels 3 to 5.
Six test are “higher” mental tests suitable for students studying levels 5 to 8.
Printed test answer sheets are included to work through before viewing the answers and explanations.
